Matthias Sammer, a Borussia Dortmund advisor, has spoken openly about the potential of Erling Haaland joining Manchester City, following rumors on Wednesday that a provision in the striker’s contract must be activated by April 30.
Haaland is under contract with Dortmund until 2024, but German newspaper Bild reported on Wednesday that the Norwegian may leave at the conclusion of the season for 75 million euros ($82 million) if he exercises his release option.
Sammer, a former Dortmund player and coach, is a major figure in the club’s hierarchy.
On Tuesday, he suggested Haaland would prosper under City’s Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, speaking as a TV analyst for Amazon Prime.
“They will both gain from each other,” Sammer, who has advised Dortmund since 2018, said. “Pep, of course, has certain ideas, which I was permitted to experience for three years.”
From 2013 to 2016, Sammer was the sports director of Bayern Munich, where Guardiola was the head coach.
City are apparently willing to pay Haaland £500,000 per week ($654,000, 594,000 euros), according to the 54-year-old.
“When I saw the figures, I experienced whiplash; I can’t even count that far,” Sammer stated.
