Hummels Returns as Dortmund Seeks to Cut Bayern’s Lead.

Mats Hummels has been cleared to play after recovering from Covid and should be available for Borussia Dortmund’s rescheduled Bundesliga match against Mainz on Wednesday.

Dortmund’s lead over Bayern Munich in Germany’s top division would be cut to four points with a win away from home.
Dortmund coach Marco Rose is hoping for a start for his captain Mats Hummels.

“He cleared and passed all of his medical exams. On Tuesday, Rose remarked of Hummels, “We’ll see if he can play.”

The match was rescheduled from March 6 due to a Covid outbreak among the Mainz squad.

Dortmund are still without defender Raphael Guerreiro of Portugal, who tested positive for the coronavirus last week.

“He’s getting better, there are other sicknesses than Covid,” Rose remarked, adding that club captain Marco Reus is still out due to illness.

Bayern Munich is on track to win the Bundesliga for the tenth time in a row, and Rose dismissed Dortmund’s chances of closing the points difference and forcing a title duel.

“If we hold our own in Mainz and obtain a solid result,” he continued, “the margin to Bayern will narrow.”

Bayern Munich will face Dortmund in a potential confrontation on April 23 in Munich.

Dortmund has won all four of their previous visits to Mainz, with the latest defeat coming in 2014.
