McAvennie believes Calvin Bassey is not prepared for the Premier League.

Former Aston Villa manager Frank Avennie believes Calvin Bassey is not skilled enough to play in the Premier League.

Following a stellar season with Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, Bassey has been linked with a move to Aston Villa.

Rangers are also considering selling the versatile defender for £25 million.

Aside from Aston Villa, Bassey is being pursued by a number of Premier League clubs.

McAvennie, on the other hand, believes the 22-year-old is unprepared for the English Premier League and will be torn apart by opponents.

“Is he able to play in the Premier League right now?” McAvennie told Football Insider, “I don’t think so.”

“I don’t think he (Bassey) has what it takes to play in the Premier League.” Because he has worked in Scotland, Gerrard is intrigued in him.

“It’s an entirely different game in England.” He has a lot of muscle, but he’ll be ripped to shreds if he runs into someone like Jack Grealish.

“I’m sorry to tell you this, Bassey, but you’re correct. He might be ready after another year with the Rangers.

“The harsh reality is that he’s good enough right now.”

Since joining the Gers on a free transfer from Leicester City in June 2020, Bassey has shown to be a valuable addition.

During the 2021-22 season, the Nigerian international played 50 games for Rangers in all competitions. He had six assists to his credit but no goals.
