The success of the eighth edition of the historic, World Athletics silver label Okpekpe international 10km road race was attributed to adequate security provided by both the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security, DSS, according to the race’s organizers.
According to race director Zack Amodu, the safety of race participants has always been a top priority for the event’s organizers.
“As race organizers, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of all race participants, including athletes, officials, and spectators.” Any time you bring a large group of people together, there is a security risk. The risk of injury is far too significant to ignore event safety. It is not something we can do on our own, therefore the involvement of the Police and the DSS, who did a fantastic job starting from Lagos when the international athletes arrived in Benin city, where protection was provided on the trip to Auchi,” Amodu explained.

The presence of the police and DSS was not just for the purpose of averting a security danger, but also to assist at the event site.
