Legendary Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has attacked Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara, calling him “one of the most overrated players in European football.”

Liverpool, according to Hamann, require a midfield overhaul after narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League this season.

The former German international believes Liverpool’s trio of midfielders lack imagination, and has been particularly critical of Alcantara, whom he says gives little in games that the Reds do not control.

Hamann was also disrespectful of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, as well as Naby Keita.

“The Reds, in my opinion, need to update the team a little bit, particularly in midfield,” Hamann told Sky Sport Germany.

“I’m not sure what all the fuss is about Thiago. He is, in my opinion, one of Europe’s most overrated players.

“He’s a good player when things are going well and you have a lot of possession, but when it comes down to it, you don’t see him.”

“If you need someone to set accents, he’s not the guy.”

“Keita is a letdown, but [Jordan] Henderson is a hard worker. They require a player who can make a difference and add that extra something to the team.”

Alcantara won his first piece of silverware with Liverpool in the 2021–22 EFL Cup final, beating Chelsea 11–10 on penalties after the game was at 0–0 AET on February 27, 2022.

Alcantara was supposed to start the final, but he got hurt in the warm-up and had to be substituted by Naby Keta. During the cup run, Alcantara did not make a single appearance.

He made his Liverpool debut in the 2022 FA Cup Final on 14 May 2022, scoring a 6–5 penalty shootout triumph over Chelsea after the game ended 0–0 after extra time.

He put the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to score his penalty. Since joining Liverpool, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder has won two trophies.
