On Sunday evening at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, African long jump champion Ese Brume successfully defended her Commonwealth Games long jump crown.

The U20 athlete from Nigeria, who won the title for the first time in 2014, missed the opportunity to defend it four years ago on Australia’s Gold Coast. She is now 26 years old.

After winning silver at the World Athletics Championships last month in Oregon, USA, Brume entered the Commonwealth Games with only one goal in mind: to win back her championship. She accomplished this goal by twice breaking the 6.97m Games record formerly held by Australia’s Bronwyn Thompson.

Brume started her ascent to the top of the podium with a foul but came back in the second with a magnificent 6.99m to break the previous Games record.

She jumped 6.81 meters in the third round, equaled her Games record once more in the fourth, and then added the finishing touch with the first 7-meter leap in Games history.

The World Athletics Championships indoor and outdoor silver winner crossed the finish line at the 7-meter mark to break her second evening Games record and become only the second Nigerian track and field athlete in Commonwealth Games history to win gold at two different games.

She is also the third Nigerian track and field athlete, after Blessing Okagbare (100m and 200m in 2014) and Tobi Amusan, to win at least two gold medals at the Games (100m hurdles, 2018 and 2022 and 4x100m in 2022).

After Modupe Oshikoya won the long jump gold medal in 1974 to become the first Nigerian woman to win the gold medal at the Games, Brume is the second Nigerian woman to do so.
