Okey Kpalukwu, the general manager of Rivers United Football Club, thinks the Port Harcourt team has what it takes to defeat Champion Wydad Casablanca.
In the opening round of the CAF Champions League, Rivers United defeated Watanga FC of Liberia 3-1 overall to set up a matchup with Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.
On October 9, 2022, at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, the Nigerian representatives will host Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the next round. A week later, they will travel to Casablanca, Morocco, for the opposite match.
And despite being paired with the defending champions, Kpalukwu is optimistic Rivers United can defeat Wydad and advance to the group stage.
Kpalukwu was quoted on the Rivers United Twitter account as saying, “It’s going to be a very tough match against the defending champions, but I want to assure Rivers people and Nigerians that Rivers United have got the quality, support, and backing to qualify into the group stage of the competition.”
The boys will put in a lot of effort, and entering the group stage this time will require all hands on deck.
Kpalukwu continued by expressing gratitude to the team’s supporters, including the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and the commissioner of sports, Barrister Chris Green.
“I want to express my gratitude to our amiable Governor for his outstanding assistance to the team, including his approval and provision of the funds required for the continental trip.
In the same vein, Barr. Chris Green, the sports commissioner, deserves special recognition for his tireless efforts and encouragement to get the players in the right frame of mind, without which not much could have been accomplished.
