CAFCL: Rivers United Coach, Eguma is optimistic Going Into The Second Leg Vs Wydad’

In the second leg of their CAF Champions League first round matchup, Rivers United head coach Stanley Eguma is optimistic that his team can defeat Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.

The NPFL champions Rivers United overcame a goal deficit to defeat Wydad 2-1 in the rematch, which was played on Sunday in Port Harcourt.

Senegal forward Bouly Junior Sambou gave CAF Champions League champion Wydad the lead in the 32nd minute.

Two minutes later, Rivers United’s Malachi Ohawume brought the score even.

With a precise strike in the 53rd minute, Ghanaian immigrant Paul Acquah gave Rivers United the lead for the first time in the match.

Eguma expressed optimism that Rivers United have what it takes to stop Wydad and advance to the competition’s group stage despite the slight first-leg advantage.

“It’s close, but I’m really optimistic; this is a football game. In terms of game quality, Wydad AC was not significantly superior to us, according to Eguma’s post-game study.

“All we have to do is muster up the confidence to play them in Morocco according to our tactical preparations. Although the terrain is challenging, football is not a difficult subject.

“I realize that many people will write us off, but I want to assure you that it is still early in the process.

“Within us, we know that we have a tremendous struggle to do, and am assuring you that we will go there not to sleep but to work and to put them under heavy pressure to see that we get through to the group stage.”

Eguma bemoaned his team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal and claimed that a larger lead would have given them a bigger edge going into the second leg.

As he put it, “Scoring us early in the game that goal destabilized us, but I praise the players for their courage, poise, comportment, and they showed character.

“Even though we missed numerous scoring opportunities, the game could have finished 3-1 or 4-1 if we had taken advantage of them, giving us a slight advantage, but you can’t take anything away from the Moroccans,” said the commentator.
