A pair of F-16 fighter planes accompanied the Polish national football team’s aircraft during a portion of the team’s flight to the World Cup in Qatar, providing additional protection.

Prior to their opening World Cup match against Mexico next week, the Poland team, captained by prolific striker Robert Lewandowski, left for Qatar on Thursday.

On Tuesday, November 15, a rocket that was four miles from the Ukrainian border killed two farmers, prompting the national team plane to be directed by fighter jets to Poland’s southern border.

Following the explosion, troops closed the border between Ukraine and Poland, raising concerns of a Russian immigration crisis.

On Tuesday, November 22, the Polish national team will begin their competition against Mexico.

Poland has qualified for back-to-back World Cups and, after finishing third in the group stage in 2018, will be looking to advance to the knockout stages for the first time since 1986.
