Mane and De Ligt Are Not Elite Players, Says Rummenigge

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a former chairman of Bayern Munich, admitted that the additions of Sadio Mane, a former Liverpool striker, and Matthijs de Ligt, a Juventus forward, left him unimpressed.

Rummenigge questioned why Bayern Munich sports director Hasan Salihamidzic lauded the additions of Mane and De Ligt in his Sportbuzzer column.

He claims that none of the two players is a top player.

“Why have Hasan Salihamidzic and co. received plaudits recently for their summer transfers? Sincerely, I can’t join this chorus of supporters,” says Rummenigge for Sportbuzzer.

With all due respect, I must say that neither Sadio Mané nor Matthijs de Ligt are players of the highest caliber, in my opinion. Naturally, Mané will succeed in the Bundesliga and score his goals, but at 30, I don’t think he will be at the very peak of his game.

“De Ligt has me even more unconvinced. Absolutely, he’s only 22. Nevertheless, he lost time over his final three seasons at Juventus. After a ferocious start to his Ajax career, he ought to have been able to grow more. To name him Bayern’s defensive coordinator, in my opinion, is incredibly audacious. Niklas Süle may have been kept, in fact.
